The Splitdorf iHorn is made from an antique Splitdorf Radio Speaker Horn Model D, made between 1923 and 1929. Its matte finish is back in style.
The horn was made by Splitdorf Electrical, in Newark, New Jersey. Splitdorf Electrical was founded in 1858.Like most early American enterprises, Splitdorf was all about diversity, being primarily a manufacturer of ignition products for automobiles but getting into the radio business in 1923. In 1928 Splitdorf entered into what today would be called a joint venture with Edison, for purposes of manufacturing only. However, the big giant Edison swallowed Splitdorf through merger in January of 1929. Edison’s primary reason for purchasing Splitdorf was to acquire the patent rights held by Splitdorf.
The Splitdorf is a beautifully clean iHorn with an angular neck and a classic black finish. It is also a reminder that when you put all of your eggs in one basket, you are the mercy of whomever is carrying that basket.
